Yuga Labs sells CryptoPunks IP to Infinite Node Foundation

The Infinite Node Foundation (NODE), a US-based non-profit dedicated to digital art, has significantly expanded its holdings and influence. NODE recently acquired the intellectual property rights to the CryptoPunks NFT collection from Yuga Labs, a major player in the NFT space. This acquisition, coupled with a $25 million endowment, positions NODE as the best-funded non-profit solely focused on digital art in the United States. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the acquisition is a landmark event in the NFT world.

CryptoPunks, a collection of 10,000 algorithmically generated pixel art characters, holds a unique place in NFT history. Launched in 2017 by Larva Labs, the collection boasts a total market capitalization nearing $1.2 billion (as of May 13th, data from CoinGecko). Its innovative approach, existing “outside of the art world” yet profoundly impacting it, spearheaded a cultural shift that continues to reshape the digital landscape. CryptoPunks’ sales have exceeded $3 billion, generating substantial royalties for NFT holders. A single CryptoPunk NFT reached a record-breaking sale price of nearly $24 million in 2022.

Yuga Labs, known for its Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, acquired CryptoPunks (and Meebits, another Larva Labs creation) in 2022. Interestingly, Yuga Labs subsequently sold the Meebits collection in February of this year. The company also recently announced the closure of a SEC investigation, which it considers a positive development for the NFT industry.

NODE has assembled a notable advisory board to manage the CryptoPunks collection. This board includes the original artists, Matt Hall and John Watkinson, and a representative from Yuga Labs. NODE’s stated goal is to integrate CryptoPunks into both digital and traditional art historical contexts, ensuring the collection’s longevity and cultural significance. The acquisition marks a significant step towards the broader acceptance and integration of digital art within established artistic canons.
