US tourist drugged by fake Uber driver and robbed of $123K BTC — Report

A concerning trend of violent crime targeting cryptocurrency investors and industry professionals is escalating, with recent incidents highlighting the vulnerability of individuals within the crypto space. One such case involves Jacob Irwin-Cline, an American tourist in London, who fell victim to a sophisticated drugging and theft scheme.

While out at a bar, Irwin-Cline unknowingly accepted a ride from a fraudulent taxi driver resembling his Uber driver. The driver, after offering a likely scopolamine-laced cigarette, rendered Irwin-Cline unconscious. Upon awakening, he discovered his phone – containing access to his cryptocurrency accounts holding $123,000 in Bitcoin – had been stolen. The driver then fled the scene, striking Irwin-Cline with his vehicle.

This incident underscores a broader pattern of escalating criminal activity targeting the cryptocurrency community. Several high-profile cases in May illustrate this disturbing trend. In one instance, the father of a crypto exchange owner was held captive in France by organized crime demanding ransom. French police intervened, resulting in the father’s release. Separately, an attempted kidnapping targeted the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium crypto exchange, in a daylight attack in Paris. Though the family resisted, the incident highlights the growing threat.

The increase in violent attacks – encompassing kidnappings, extortion, armed robberies, and ransom demands – has spurred heightened security measures among crypto investors and executives. Many are seeking personal protection services, including bodyguards and enhanced security protocols. This heightened awareness reflects a significant shift in the landscape, as the lucrative nature of the cryptocurrency industry makes individuals increasingly attractive targets for organized crime. The London incident, coupled with the spate of attacks in France, serves as a stark warning, prompting a crucial conversation about the necessary precautions to safeguard individuals and assets within the crypto ecosystem. The sophistication of these attacks, utilizing techniques such as drugging and impersonation, necessitates a multi-pronged approach to prevention and response.
