The Open Network Foundation (TON Foundation) has appointed Nikola Plecas, a former Visa executive, as its new vice president of payments. This strategic hire underscores TON’s commitment to expanding its payment infrastructure and scaling services for its extensive user base of over one billion Telegram users. Plecas’s responsibilities encompass shaping and executing TON’s payment strategy, fostering financial partnerships, and ensuring global compliance.
Plecas’s appointment signifies a significant step in TON’s roadmap, with payments identified as a core pillar of its future development. His extensive experience at Visa, where he played a key role in crypto-related initiatives, including product development and global commercialization, makes him ideally suited for this position. His expertise in streamlining on-ramp performance across various markets and developing Visa’s digital currency engagement model for European clients will be invaluable to TON. Furthermore, his contributions to numerous fintech and crypto issuance projects, coupled with his frequent appearances at industry events representing Visa, showcase his deep understanding of the payments landscape.
TON Foundation CEO Max Crown highlighted Plecas’s industry expertise and vision for scaling payment infrastructure as crucial to accelerating TON’s global growth. Plecas himself expressed enthusiasm, stating that joining the TON Foundation offers an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of global payments. His primary focus will be on building a payment architecture that’s both globally interoperable and robust enough to handle the increasing demands from developers, enterprises, and end-users.
This appointment follows TON’s recent partnership with Ethena, a decentralized stablecoin platform, which brought Ethena’s USDe and sUSDe stablecoins to Telegram users. This collaboration allows users to access US dollar-denominated savings directly within Telegram, further enhancing TON’s payment ecosystem. TON also maintains a close working relationship with Tether, having connected its ecosystem to Tether’s USDt ecosystem via LayerZero in February 2024. As part of its broader scaling strategy, TON aims to integrate its network with at least 100 other blockchains, including prominent players like Ethereum (ETH), Tron (TRX), and Solana (SOL).
