StarkWare launches mobile-friendly zero-knowledge prover

StarkWare’s new zero-knowledge (ZK) prover, STARK Two (S-two), significantly advances privacy and verification capabilities. Unlike previous solutions requiring server reliance, S-two empowers users to generate complex cryptographic proofs directly on their devices (phones, laptops, browsers). This client-side proof generation enables faster, more private applications across various internet platforms.

S-two boasts a 39-times performance increase over its predecessors, facilitating smoother experiences in privacy-enhancing applications. Its compatibility extends to CPUs and GPUs, with browser support forthcoming. This enhanced speed and accessibility unlock numerous use cases, including private transactions, ZK-based identity verification, and verifiable AI.

StarkWare’s co-founder and CEO, Eli Ben-Sasson, describes S-two as a “lightsaber in your pocket,” emphasizing its user-friendly nature and potential to democratize ZK technology. The alpha release is currently available, with a Starknet rollout planned for later this year. Early adopters include Kakarot, Nexus, ZAN, and AntChain OpenLabs, highlighting the technology’s growing traction.

StarkWare’s chief operating officer, Oren Katz, underscores S-two’s transformative impact on daily life. On-device proof generation enables privacy-preserving features in messaging, payments, and digital identity, allowing users to prove transaction validity without revealing balances or personal details. Even salary payments can leverage on-chain transparency without compromising sensitive information. Katz considers this a major step toward mainstream adoption of zero-knowledge technology.

Beyond privacy, S-two unlocks applications in other sectors. For example, it could enable offline gaming with verifiable proof of achievements generated later. This eliminates the need for on-chain logic verification, streamlining processes and improving efficiency. The launch of S-two aligns with Ethereum’s recent push for enhanced privacy, as outlined in Vitalik Buterin’s roadmap emphasizing privacy features across the Ethereum ecosystem.
