SEC delays Solana ETF as decisions for Polkadot, XRP loom

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently postponed its decision on Grayscale’s spot Solana (SOL) exchange-traded fund (ETF), pushing the deadline to October 2025. This follows a similar delay for Canary Capital’s Litecoin (LTC) ETF. The SEC’s actions highlight the cautious approach regulators are taking towards cryptocurrency-based investment products.

Spot ETFs are considered crucial for increasing liquidity and attracting institutional investment in digital assets. The successful launch of Bitcoin spot ETFs in 2024 significantly boosted Bitcoin’s price, demonstrating the potential impact of these instruments. While a Solana ETF might not generate the same massive inflows, it could still substantially increase institutional adoption of Solana by providing a regulated investment vehicle. Analyst sentiment remains largely positive, with predictions placing the odds of SOL ETF approval by the end of 2025 at 82%, and Litecoin ETF approval at 80%. These predictions are based on data from Polymarket, a decentralized betting platform.

June 2024 will see the SEC rule on several other crypto ETF applications. Grayscale’s Polkadot (DOT) ETF awaits a decision by June 11th, followed by 21Shares’ Polkadot ETF on June 24th. Decisions on Franklin Templeton’s spot XRP (XRP) ETF and Bitwise’s spot Dogecoin (DOGE) ETF are expected by June 17th. However, the SEC’s history suggests these deadlines might also be extended, as the regulator frequently utilizes its full 240-day review period for crypto-related products. This pattern was observed during the review of Bitcoin and Ether (ETH) ETF applications in 2023 and 2024.

The delays underscore the complexities and regulatory scrutiny surrounding crypto ETFs. While the potential benefits for increased liquidity and institutional adoption are significant, the SEC’s cautious approach indicates a thorough vetting process before approving these products. The ongoing evaluation of these ETFs will continue to shape the landscape of cryptocurrency investment and regulation.
