A proposal to simplify Bitcoin’s base unit, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal-177 (BIP-177), has sparked debate within the Bitcoin community. Introduced by developer John Carvalho, BIP-177 aims to eliminate satoshis (100 million satoshis = 1 Bitcoin) and effectively increase the total Bitcoin supply to 21 quadrillion units. This follows a 2017 proposal for “bits” (one-millionth of a Bitcoin), which Carvalho argues only shifts, not solves, the complexity of decimal representation.
The proposal has garnered support from prominent figures like Block Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey, who argues on X (formerly Twitter) that satoshis are confusing for newcomers. He points to comments by Stevie Lee of Spiral, who observed that most people are unfamiliar with satoshis and simply want to send and receive Bitcoin. Lee believes the change wouldn’t significantly alter Bitcoin’s underlying economics.
However, BIP-177 faces considerable opposition. Swan Bitcoin CEO Cory Klippsten and Byte Federal’s Michelle Weekley contend that satoshis are easily understood, analogous to cents in a dollar. Magdalena Gronowska warns that the change could mistakenly lead people to believe Bitcoin’s price has drastically fallen or its supply inflated. Zaprite’s Parker Lewis also argues for the practicality of using satoshis.
Interestingly, even Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, displayed openness to adjusting Bitcoin’s unit display for usability, suggesting a change in decimal point placement in a 2010 forum post. This historical context adds a layer of complexity to the current debate.
The Bitcoin network’s lack of implemented improvement proposals since the Taproot upgrade in November 2021 highlights the community’s cautious approach to significant changes. The debate surrounding BIP-177 underscores the tension between maintaining Bitcoin’s core principles and enhancing its usability for a wider audience. The outcome will significantly influence how Bitcoin is perceived and utilized in the future, potentially impacting adoption rates and price perceptions.
