Vladimir Smerkis, a former Binance Russia operative and co-founder of the Telegram-based crypto project Blum, has been arrested in Moscow on suspicion of large-scale fraud. The Zamoskvoretsky District Court ordered his pre-trial detention pending investigation. The charges stem from Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code, carrying a potential sentence of two to twelve years imprisonment. While formal charges haven’t been publicly confirmed, Russian media outlets link the allegations to Smerkis’ involvement in The Token Fund and Tokenbox, crypto ventures he co-founded in 2017. These ventures reportedly resulted in investor losses totaling approximately $15 million.
Significantly, Blum, a separate entity, has announced that Smerkis resigned as chief marketing officer and is no longer associated with the project. Blum, which integrates a decentralized exchange into Telegram Mini Apps, emphasized its continued operation and commitment to its goals, including its planned token airdrop. This airdrop, hinted at in an April 3rd X post, was to distribute BLUM tokens to users who accumulate points through a mobile game. These points would be converted to tokens during a designated generation event, potentially in the third quarter of 2024.
However, Smerkis’ arrest has cast doubt on the airdrop’s future. Community members on X have expressed concerns and demanded clarification from Blum. The uncertainty surrounding the airdrop highlights the risks associated with crypto projects and the potential impact of legal issues on their operations and promises to investors. The incident underscores the importance of due diligence for anyone participating in such ventures and the potential volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency space. The lack of immediate communication from Blum has fueled speculation and anxiety among its user base, who invested time and effort in earning Blum points anticipating the token distribution. The situation remains fluid, pending further investigation and official statements from both Blum and Russian authorities.
