The Instagram account of the Migos rap group was compromised in an apparent attempt to extort Solana co-founder Raj Gokal. Multiple images, since deleted, were posted on May 27th, showcasing what appeared to be Gokal and his wife holding up their respective passports and driver’s licenses. The hacker tagged Gokal, referencing an unsuccessful extortion demand of 40 Bitcoin. Additional images included a purported dump of personal information, such as phone numbers and email addresses.
The images’ style is reminiscent of Know Your Customer (KYC) verification procedures used by crypto exchanges. However, the origin of these photos and their acquisition by the hacker remains unclear. Both the Solana Foundation and Gokal have been contacted for comment. This incident follows a May 20th X post by Gokal warning of attempts to seize control of his online accounts.
The possibility of AI-generated deepfakes, though unconfirmed, cannot be ruled out. Deepfakes have previously been exploited in crypto extortion attempts, as evidenced by podcaster Scott Melker’s experience in April, where scammers used a fabricated driver’s license to defraud a victim of at least $4 million.
This incident also highlights concerns surrounding KYC data security within crypto exchanges. Coinbase recently faced a lawsuit alleging violations of biometric privacy laws due to undisclosed use of third-party vendors for ID verification. The Migos hack underscores the vulnerabilities inherent in online identity and the potential misuse of personal information in cryptocurrency-related extortion schemes.
The nature of the leaked information—passports, driver’s licenses, and other personal details—raises serious questions about data security and the potential for future exploitation. The apparent connection between KYC procedures and the images further emphasizes the need for robust security measures within both cryptocurrency exchanges and individual user practices. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the situation unfolds.
