A significant event in the cryptocurrency market has unfolded with a crypto whale establishing a $1.1 billion long Bitcoin bet on the decentralized exchange (DEX) Hyperliquid. This unprecedented position, believed to be the first exceeding $1 billion on the platform, has captivated the crypto community. The trader, identified on X as “James Wynn,” has reportedly profited by $36 million on this trade, according to data from Hypurrscan’s block explorer.
Wynn’s strategy involved utilizing a $28.4 million margin position across multiple trades to bolster the Bitcoin (BTC) position, currently valued at $1.13 billion. The average Bitcoin entry price was $108,065. The wallet address associated with the trade is “0x507.” Analysis from HyperDash reveals that Wynn began closing some long Bitcoin positions around $106,000 on May 20th, before the recent surge. The position was briefly at a loss of approximately $16.3 million before Bitcoin’s price surge beyond $110,000. Currently, the position sits comfortably above its liquidation price of $103,790.
The boldness of this high-leverage trade has generated considerable discussion. Online commentators have described Wynn as possessing “nerves of steel” and even an “absolute mad man,” highlighting the high-risk nature of such a substantial leveraged position. Wynn self-identifies as a high-risk leverage trader and memecoin enthusiast, notably claiming to have predicted Pepe (PEPE)’s surge when its market capitalization was only $600,000.
Wynn’s involvement with Hyperliquid began two months ago, with an initial deposit of $4.65 million in USDC. Since then, the trader has executed 32 trades, including long positions on various assets like XRP, the Official Trump (TRUMP) token, Fartcoin (FARTCOIN), and Toncoin (TON). The Hyperliquid DEX operates on the Hyperliquid layer 1 blockchain, offering a range of services, including spot trading and lending/borrowing functionalities. This substantial trade underscores the growing activity and risk appetite within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.
