FIFA has chosen Avalanche to power its dedicated blockchain network, designed to enhance fan engagement and NFT experiences. This layer-1 (L1) blockchain, built on Avalanche’s scalable infrastructure, aims to serve FIFA’s vast global fanbase of five billion. The decision follows an earlier announcement of plans for a new blockchain-based collectibles network.
The selection of Avalanche was based on a comprehensive evaluation of various factors, including performance benchmarks, security protocols, transaction fees, customization options, and scalability capabilities. This assessment, undertaken by FIFA, highlighted Avalanche’s suitability for the project. Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex and FIFA Collect, emphasized the importance of these factors in the decision-making process.
A key benefit of using Avalanche is its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility. This feature ensures seamless integration with popular decentralized wallets and applications, improving user accessibility and experience. The move will allow FIFA to deliver enhanced digital collectibles and immersive fan experiences leveraging Avalanche’s speed and scalability.
As part of this transition, FIFA’s existing NFT marketplace and collection, FIFA Collect, will be migrated to the new Avalanche-powered blockchain. This migration necessitates a shift in supported wallets. Previously compatible Algorand-based wallets, such as Pera and Defly, will no longer be supported. Instead, users will need to connect via MetaMask or other EVM-compatible wallets that utilize WalletConnect.
While FIFA has not yet publicly disclosed future plans and business cases for this blockchain, the initiative underscores the organization’s commitment to utilizing blockchain technology for innovative fan engagement strategies. The partnership with Avalanche marks a significant step towards providing unique digital experiences for FIFA’s global community. This follows a previous collaboration with Algorand for an NFT collection launched ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup. The move also reflects a broader trend of major organizations adopting blockchain technology for diverse applications.
