Europol helps dismantle $23M ‘mafia crypto bank’

A major international operation targeting a “mafia crypto bank” resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects in January 2025. The coordinated effort, involving over 250 officers from Spain, Austria, and Belgium, successfully disrupted a criminal network allegedly laundering over €21 million ($23.5 million) in cryptocurrency.

Europol’s May 14th statement detailed the operation’s success, highlighting the network’s facilitation of money laundering for criminal entities in China and the Middle East. The organization, operating under the guise of a legitimate remittance business (hawala) and advertising its services on social media, catered to various criminal activities, including migrant smuggling and drug trafficking. The sophisticated operation utilized cryptocurrency to obscure the flow of illicit funds.

The arrests, primarily of Chinese and Syrian nationals, led to the seizure of significant assets valued at €4.5 million ($5 million). This included €183,000 ($205,000) in cryptocurrency, €421,000 ($471,000) in cash from 77 bank accounts, and luxury goods such as vehicles, shotguns, electronic devices, bags, watches, and cigars, totaling €876,000 ($980,000). Fifteen of the 17 arrested individuals are currently imprisoned.

The Almería court in Spain spearheaded the investigation, collaborating with Europol and Belgian authorities to dismantle the organization. The operation underscores the growing concern regarding cryptocurrency’s use in facilitating illicit financial activities. According to Chainalysis, illicit cryptocurrency transactions reached $51.3 billion in 2024, representing an 11.3% year-on-year increase. This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges law enforcement faces in combating sophisticated criminal networks leveraging cryptocurrency for money laundering. The successful disruption of this operation highlights the importance of international cooperation and advanced investigative techniques in combating financial crime within the evolving digital landscape.
