Crypto travelers bring 3x greater lifetime value than fiat users

Cryptocurrency is rapidly transforming the travel industry, with travelers using digital assets for bookings spending significantly more than their fiat-using counterparts. A joint report from Binance Pay and Travala reveals that crypto-based bookings on Travala reached $80 million in 2024, a substantial increase from $45 million the previous year. This surge is driven by higher spending per transaction: crypto travelers averaged $1,211 per booking, more than 2.5 times the $469 spent by fiat users. Furthermore, crypto users demonstrate significantly higher lifetime value, exhibiting longer stays and higher repeat booking rates—a 57% increase in repeat hotel purchases compared to fiat users.

Travala’s CEO, Juan Otero, attributes this trend to the flexible nature of Web3 jobs and remote work lifestyles, enabling frequent travel and extended stays. The borderless nature of cryptocurrencies is a key advantage, eliminating currency exchange hassles and foreign transaction fees, as highlighted by Binance Pay’s global head, Jonathan Lim. This aligns with a broader trend: airlines integrating digital currencies have seen a 40% increase in bookings, with travel and hospitality accounting for 14% of all crypto transactions in 2024.

The increasing adoption of cryptocurrencies is a major catalyst. Crypto ownership boasts a 99% compound annual growth rate, far surpassing traditional payment methods, and 65% of crypto owners express interest in using it for payments. Travala, founded in 2017, supports over 141 cryptocurrencies, facilitating seamless transactions.

While the first Bitcoin transaction celebrated its 15th anniversary in May 2025, the acceptance of crypto payments has expanded beyond its early adoption by high-end retailers. Now, even fast-food chains like Steak’n Shake are accepting Bitcoin, although transaction fees and confirmation times remain a challenge. Binance Pay, however, addresses this by offering swift, off-chain transactions within the Binance ecosystem. Despite this, most Travala transactions utilize stablecoins like USDT and USDC, ultimately converted to fiat at the point of sale.
