Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, is poised to launch its second-generation Web3 smartphone, the Seeker, on August 4th, following a successful pre-sale of 150,000 units. The device, initially unveiled in September 2024, distinguishes itself from its predecessor, the Saga, by incorporating a novel architectural framework and a native token.
The Seeker’s pricing strategy involved two phases: a Founder window at $450 per unit and an Early Adopter window at $500. Based on the lower price point, Solana Mobile projects at least $67.5 million in gross revenue from device sales. This figure pales in comparison to Apple’s $199.3 billion iPhone revenue in 2024, highlighting the challenges faced by entrants in the competitive mobile market.
A key differentiator for the Seeker is its underlying architecture, TEEPIN (Trusted Execution Environment Platform Infrastructure Network). This three-layered system—encompassing hardware, platform, and network—aims to create a trustless environment for users, developers, and device manufacturers. Solana Labs co-founder and CEO, Anatoly Yakovenko, describes TEEPIN as a significant advancement in mobile technology, emphasizing its cryptographic verification of trust.
Further solidifying the Seeker’s ecosystem is the introduction of SKR, a native token designed to reshape the traditional mobile business model. According to Emmett Hollyer, Solana Mobile’s general manager, SKR grants stakeholders actual ownership within the platform. This tokenomics approach contrasts with the initial reception of the Saga, Solana Mobile’s first device, which garnered mixed reviews within the Web3 community. While some celebrated it as a potential “iPhone moment,” others highlighted Solana’s network outages as a significant drawback.
The Saga’s trajectory, however, took an unexpected turn in late 2023. A surge in memecoin value stored on the devices transformed them into profitable assets, with some units fetching thousands of dollars on eBay. This surge in demand led to a complete sell-out by December 2023. The Seeker’s launch, coupled with its innovative architecture and native token, positions Solana Mobile for a potentially more successful market entry compared to its predecessor.
