Donald Trump’s May 22nd memecoin dinner, offering access to the President for top holders of his Official Trump (TRUMP) token, has sparked significant controversy. The event, with attendees reportedly spending over $100 million collectively for the opportunity to meet with the President, has drawn criticism from Democratic organizations, members of Congress, and figures within the crypto industry.
Concerns center on potential bribery and corruption, with accusations that Trump is “selling access” to his office. Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy organization, plans protests near the dinner venue, citing unconstitutional behavior and the potential for foreign influence through cryptocurrency investments. The organization, alongside Our Revolution and local Democratic groups, will hold rallies and press events on May 22nd to highlight these concerns. Senator Jeff Merkley is expected to attend one of these events.
The controversy has also impacted crypto-related legislation. The memecoin dinner, coupled with concerns surrounding the Trump family’s involvement with World Liberty Financial and its USD1 stablecoin, led some Democrats to initially oppose the GENIUS Act, aiming to regulate payment stablecoins. Despite these concerns, the bill passed a key procedural vote in the Senate on May 19th.
Senator Mark Warner acknowledged concerns about the Trump family’s crypto activities but stressed the importance of not letting these issues overshadow the broader implications of blockchain technology. Senator Chris Murphy, however, voted against the GENIUS Act, calling for amendments to prevent presidents from issuing stablecoins and requesting a full list of dinner attendees from the White House. He suspects some attendees may seek favors in exchange for their token purchases.
Further actions include a press event featuring Senators Murphy and Warren alongside Public Citizen representatives, and a separate press conference by Representative Maxine Waters, who intends to introduce a bill to counter Trump’s memecoin activities. The exact number of attendees to both the main dinner and a smaller VIP event remains unclear. The controversy highlights the intersection of politics, cryptocurrency, and concerns about potential conflicts of interest and ethical breaches.
