Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi has partnered with cryptocurrency platform Bitget.
Singapore-headquartered Bitget said the deal will give fans of the Paris Saint-Germain forward the opportunity to explore Web 3.0 and the potential of trading crypto.
The tie-up also includes a ‘shared understanding’ allowing both parties to commit to more ‘impactful efforts’ extending beyond crypto and soccer, though no further details were given.
The agreement has been signed ahead of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar, which will be Messi’s fifth appearance at the global soccer showpiece.
It also sees the 35-year-old, who ranked fifth in SportsPro’s latest 50 Most Marketable (50MM) Athletes list, land his second blockchain-related sponsorship, having been named a global brand ambassador of Socios in March. That deal is reportedly worth US$20 million over three years.
For Bitget, the pact adds to partnerships with the likes of Italian soccer giants Juventus and esports’ Team Spirit.
“We try to reflect the diversity and richness of our platform community in the partnerships we choose,” said Gracy Chen, managing director of Bitget.
“We open up Web 3.0 to sports fans; they open the field to crypto traders. As the football World Cup approaches, Messi is to lead Argentina to new glory. We are honoured to have such a force of nature collaborate with us.”
Messi added: “I wanted to thank Bitget for their enthusiasm in making me participate in the world of crypto. I trust that both parties can activate meaningful initiatives as well as in offering Web 3.0 to the sports fans.”
