The creator-centric NFT marketplace has long been a proponent of community-based initiatives and is especially supportive of CCO brands. These projects feature works that hold no copyright reservations and allow for the holders to monetize, create, and explore all types of utility and applications as a result.
Most famously in this category is the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and its holders have taken advantage of the intellectual property (IP), by creating wines, games, merchandise, and even themed restaurants.
“The MFers project has spawned a whole new world, as have all the best CC0 projects. They are the kindling to a larger fire and the catalyst to a new model of community ownership and creative freedom in the NFT space,” said Rarible’s chief business development officer Sunil Singhvi, adding that “While aggregated marketplaces are still important to aid discovery and help fuel the broader ecosystem, this custom marketplace will allow fans and community-members a place to dive deeper, learn more, and bask in glory what the MFers community has built.”
With MFers creator Sartoshi stepping down, the collaboration comes at a unique time where the success of the brand is more community lead than ever before. Singhvi mentions that while they did receive Sartoshi’s blessing for the project, that MFers has been a community led project from almost day one and that the new marketplace is about “giving a home to this vibrant community and ensuring the project has a place to grow and flourish, even without a creator.
In a recent blog post Rarible shared a core reason behind the need for community-specific marketplaces stating that “because most PFP projects are about the community you get to access and the network you get to build, these teams have decided to build a safe place where the community can trade and navigate their NFTs within the brand’s ecosystem,” the platform added that “in many community marketplaces, part of the trading fees also goes towards the community/DAO wallet. That way, the community directly benefits from every trade.”
The new marketplace goes live later today and will feature collections from CREYZIES — a 10k collection that was airdropped to all MFer holders on 4/20 — and ‘end of sartoshi’ — an open mint edition that Sartoshi announced as their last mint before deleting socials.
