It’s always cheering to see a new Jacob & Co. offering that sports the firm’s Astronomia caliber. The series entries are always fascinating; colorful, engaging examples of the mechanically involute. From an (Alec) Monopoly-themed model to the tour-de-force Maestro Worldtime, each is worth its weight in gold, and then some.
The newest in the series, the Astronomia Solar Bitcoin, is worth virtual gold. The watch taps into the cashola zeitgeist — cryptocurrency — and can only be purchased with digital dollars. Its singular design places sun, earth and moon in sympathetic rotation, but renders them in terms of financial value; the sun is yellow sapphire, the earth’s land masses are in gold against black oceans, and the moon is a one-carat diamond.
The Astronomia Solar Bitcoin’s case is titanium, but it’s been treated to a diamond-like carbon coating that presents it as jet black. A black alligator strap with a buckle also treated in DLC finishes the watch. Priced at $348,000.
