Real-world assets could revitalize dying NFT lending market: DappRadar

The NFT lending market, once booming with $1 billion in volume in January 2024, has experienced a dramatic 97% decline, reaching a mere $50 million by May 2025. This downturn, according to DappRadar analyst Sara Gherghelas, is due to a lack of compelling catalysts to revitalize the sector. The current state is characterized by low activity across the board, with both borrowers and lenders significantly reduced.

Borrower activity has plummeted by 90% since January 2024, while lender participation has shrunk by 78%. The average loan size has also fallen drastically, from $22,000 in 2022 to $4,000 in May 2025, a 71% year-over-year decrease, indicating either a shift towards lower-value assets or increased borrower caution. Loan durations have also shortened, averaging 31 days in 2025 compared to roughly 40 days in 2023, suggesting more frequent, shorter-term borrowing for tactical liquidity.

This decline in NFT lending is intrinsically linked to the broader NFT market downturn, which saw a 61% drop in volume during the first quarter of 2025. The collapse in collateral value directly impacted lending activity, with only a few outlier protocols managing to maintain or regain traction. The shrinking number of active NFT lending applications, currently limited to eight protocols with significant market share, further highlights the sector’s struggles.

Gherghelas suggests that several factors could potentially reignite the NFT lending sector. The integration of real-world assets, such as tokenized real estate, into NFTs could provide more stable and trusted collateral. Improved user tools that simplify the borrowing process, coupled with the development of “smart infrastructure” like undercollateralized loans, credit scores, and AI-driven risk matching, are also crucial.

The “flip-for-liquidity” model, successful during bull markets, is proving inadequate in the current risk-averse environment. However, the report concludes that NFT lending is not necessarily finished, but rather undergoing a shift in focus. A potential resurgence hinges on increased utility, cultural relevance, and improved platform design.
