Elon Musk’s X Money payment and banking app is entering beta testing, as confirmed by Musk himself via an X post on May 25th. This follows previous announcements and speculation about the app’s development and launch. A limited beta test will commence initially, reflecting Musk’s emphasis on caution when handling users’ financial data.
X Money’s planned launch in 2025 was previously reported by the platform’s official X account. Musk’s confirmation on May 25th adds weight to these earlier statements, particularly in light of software code leaks reported in January 2025 that suggested an imminent launch. The company has been actively securing transmitter licenses across the United States, currently holding 41.
The origins of X Money can be traced back to October 2022, when Musk described his Twitter acquisition as a catalyst for creating “X, the everything app.” The subsequent rebranding of Twitter to X, coupled with CEO Linda Yaccarino’s statements about “unlimited interactivity” and payment integration, fueled speculation about the platform’s future capabilities, including potential cryptocurrency support. Initial predictions placed the launch in mid-2024.
However, the project has not been without controversy. Following President Trump’s appointment of Musk to head the Department of Government Efficiency’s Workforce Optimization Initiative (DOGE), and Musk’s subsequent involvement in the administration, criticism emerged from officials like Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren voiced concerns about Musk’s financial motives behind X Money, citing potential misuse of user financial data and his attempts to undermine the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Despite this criticism, X Money continues its progress toward launch, highlighting the evolving landscape of fintech and the increasing convergence of social media and financial services.
