Hedera Africa Hackathon launches with $1M prize pool and Web3 focus

The Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025, a joint initiative by the Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation, aims to accelerate Web3 and AI adoption across Africa. This global event, boasting a $1 million prize pool, will run from August 1st to September 30th, targeting over 10,000 participants from 15 African nations. Open to developers, students, and entrepreneurs worldwide, the hackathon leverages the Hedera network.

The competition focuses on four key tracks: on-chain finance and Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenization; Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) sustainability and traceability; self-sovereign identity (SSI) and AI; and gaming, metaverse, and NFTs. Up to 15 teams will be awarded prizes based on innovation, impact, and alignment with the hackathon’s objectives.

With onsite events planned for over 20 African cities including Lagos, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Casablanca, and Tunis, the hackathon reflects the growing interest in Africa’s Web3 potential. Over 50 partners and 100 universities and tech hubs are already involved.

Africa’s potential for Web3 adoption stems from several factors. High inflation, a weak banking system, and widespread corruption limit access to reliable financial services for many Africans, creating a fertile ground for Web3 alternatives like Jambo and Yellow Card. Furthermore, Africa possesses a young, ambitious, tech-savvy population, a demographic advantage highlighted by Kamal Youssefi, president of the Hashgraph Association’s board of directors. Partnerships like Hedera’s collaboration with Orange, providing digital empowerment programs across 16 African countries, further strengthen this potential.

Paolo Tasca, executive chairman of the Exponential Science Foundation, emphasizes Africa’s capacity for digital adoption while acknowledging existing barriers like infrastructure limitations and educational gaps. Government initiatives, such as Nigeria’s annual program to train 1,000 citizens in AI and blockchain technologies, are actively addressing these challenges. The Hedera Africa Hackathon serves as a crucial catalyst for harnessing Africa’s potential and fostering innovation within the Web3 and AI landscape.
