US House Democrats are investigating Donald Trump’s crypto-related activities, demanding access to suspicious activity reports (SARs) from the Treasury Department. Representatives Connolly, Morelle, and Raskin’s May 14th letter requests all SARs filed since 2023 concerning World Liberty Financial (WLF) and the Official Trump (TRUMP) token. This request is part of a broader probe encompassing WinRed, America PAC, Elon Musk’s super PAC, and other political action committees.
The investigation aims to determine the need for legislation to prevent violations of campaign finance, consumer protection, bribery, securities fraud, and other anti-corruption laws. Democrats are particularly concerned about potential misuse of WLF and the TRUMP token. They highlight WLF’s sale of tokens to foreign investors, who face less stringent regulations, raising concerns about foreign influence peddling. Justin Sun’s investment in WLF and the subsequent pause in the SEC lawsuit against him are also under scrutiny.
The lack of public disclosure regarding TRUMP token purchasers is another key concern. Democrats argue this opacity could allow bad actors to influence Trump through token purchases. The investigation also seeks SARs related to Republican digital fundraising platform WinRed and Elon Musk’s super PAC, which contributed $250 million to Trump’s election campaign.
This inquiry is the latest in a series of Democrat-led actions targeting Trump’s crypto ventures. Previous actions include a letter to the Department of Justice and Treasury Department expressing concerns about Trump’s ties to Binance and potential conflicts of interest, as well as two bills and a subcommittee inquiry focusing on Trump’s ability to profit from his crypto initiatives. These actions underscore the Democrats’ determination to investigate potential financial misconduct and conflicts of interest related to Trump’s involvement in the cryptocurrency space. The requested information is crucial in determining whether legal violations occurred and whether new legislation is necessary to prevent future abuses.
