Chainalysis CEO offers a clue into recent spate of Paris crypto attacks

Cryptocurrency’s traceability is proving a challenge for some criminal organizations, leading to a rise in crypto-related kidnappings, according to Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin. Despite a perception of untraceability, law enforcement is successfully tracking stolen funds and ransom payments, resulting in numerous arrests. Levin highlighted this during the 2025 Consensus crypto conference, emphasizing that the message of crypto’s traceability hasn’t reached all organized crime groups, some of which are based in France.

Recent incidents in Paris underscore this issue. In May 2025, there were two significant kidnapping attempts targeting individuals connected to the crypto industry: one involving the daughter and grandson of Paymium’s CEO, and another resulting in the kidnapping of a crypto entrepreneur’s father, who was released after several days. These events prompted meetings between France’s interior minister and crypto professionals to address security concerns. This follows warnings from blockchain investigator ZachXBT in October 2024 about a surge in crypto home invasion thefts in Western Europe.

Levin stressed the importance of communicating the traceability of crypto payments and the successes of law enforcement in prosecuting those involved. He believes that even if the kidnappers aren’t caught, tracing the payments can lead to the apprehension of the organized crime groups behind the attacks. While acknowledging the arrests of crypto robbers, Levin described the situation as “bleak,” and emphasized the need for further industry efforts to deter theft. He urged individuals to be cautious about personal information shared online.

Statistics reveal a concerning trend. In 2025, 22 in-person crypto-related thefts were recorded, compared to 28 in 2024 (data from a GitHub list by Jameson Lopp). However, underreporting due to victimization fears, as noted in a 2024 University of Cambridge study, suggests the actual numbers might be significantly higher. The case of Amouranth, a streamer who was targeted in a March 2025 home invasion, exemplifies the risks involved. Four suspects were arrested and charged in connection with this incident. Levin hopes that the lack of profitability in these crimes will deter future attacks, highlighting the potential for ransom recovery and the focus on holding perpetrators accountable.
