Donald Trump’s memecoin, TRUMP, has finalized its list of top holders, who are eligible for a May 22nd dinner and VIP tour with the former president. The project announced on May 12th that it had ceased accepting further purchases for this event, notifying the top token holders to undergo background checks for participation. As of May 12th, the top 220 wallets held over 13.7 million tokens, valued at approximately $174 million. The identity of attendees remains uncertain.
A Bloomberg report from May 7th highlighted that a significant portion of token holders reside outside the United States, raising concerns about security and potential conflicts of interest. This, coupled with the memecoin’s launch days before Trump’s January 20th inauguration, drew sharp criticism from US lawmakers and figures within the cryptocurrency industry. The April 23rd dinner announcement intensified calls for congressional oversight and accusations of corruption, with some even calling for Trump’s impeachment and others refusing to consider crypto-related legislation until concerns are addressed.
The memecoin’s launch also raises questions about potential influence peddling. Freight Technologies, a company with business interests in Mexico, announced a $20 million investment in the token in April, suggesting a possible link to Trump’s trade policies. As of May 12th, their participation in the dinner remains unconfirmed.
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt to engage with cryptocurrency supporters. Previously, he hosted a dinner for those who purchased his “mugshot” NFTs. While many attendees publicly shared their identities, similar public declarations haven’t been made regarding the memecoin dinner. Speculation surrounds the presence of Justin Sun and Elon Musk, given wallets with their usernames appear on the leaderboard. Their potential attendance underscores the intertwined nature of politics, cryptocurrency, and high-profile figures. The overall situation raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and potential insider trading.
