“At this time, the victim is not able to retrieve their money from the investments,” OPP said.

Essex County OPP’s crime unit has taken up the investigation due to the large amount of money that is missing — more than $70,000.

While cryptocurrency is a relatively new angle for scammers, OPP reminds citizens of some tried and true advice to avoid being defrauded.

Never give out personal information to unknown parties. Verify all contact information when communicating with someone. Keep a close eye on your bank account and credit cards. Take your own time and do some research when approached about a so-called opportunity.

And don’t automatically trust the name on a caller display: It could be false.

If you believe you have fallen victim to a fraudster, OPP encourages you to make a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
