While some may dismiss NFTs as mere JPG fads, they are likely to prove everyone wrong in the future by becoming one of the most powerful IPs in the entire business. Anatoly Yakovenko, the co-founder of Solana, predicts that the next Marvel or Disney will most likely be centered on NFT IP.
At the Messari Mainnet conference in New York, Yakovenko stated that “I think if you’re dreaming of starting the next Marvel or Disney in the next 20 years. It’s probably happening right now out of these NFT sets.”
The Solana Labs co-founder noted “The possibilities are endless, and this is, I think, the best place to zero-to-one a brand, or a new story, or new lore for whatever—games, movies, IP, franchises, whatever you want. It’s early days, but really, really exciting.”
He asserted that NFTs are currently the dominant, breakout use case for Web3 technology and that tokenized assets can serve as the foundation for a variety of inventions.
Many blue-chip NFT collections offer distinct types of commercial rights that may affect how holders can use their own NFTs. The popular BAYC NFT collection already offers commercial IP rights to its owners, and just last month BAYC founder Yuga Labs released an IP rights agreement for CryptoPunk and Meebits collection.
The Solana co-founder compared the growth of NFTs to the emergence of online forum communities in the 1990s, which gave rise to the social media giants of the 2000s.
Yakovenko noted “I don’t know which way it’s going to go, but it really feels like you’re looking at bulletin boards in the 90s. Like, OK—some of these are going to be Friendster, MySpace, or Facebook, but it’s really, really hard to predict.”
So we might see an NFT collection that we are familiar with or a collection that is yet to debut to grow so powerful that its IP could create the next biggest franchise. Only time will tell!!
