The skater is getting a dedicated space in gaming virtual world The Sandbox
Tony Hawk has announced he’s entering the world of blockchain games.
On Wednesday he revealed plans to build “the biggest skate park in the metaverse” in a partnership with virtual world The Sandbox and NFT platform Autograph.
Tony Hawk Land will be a new space in The Sandbox, which bills itself as “part virtual real estate, part amusement park”.
Built on the Ethereum blockchain, it lets users exchange cryptocurrency for access to virtual plots of land and monetise voxel assets by trading in-game items as NFTs.
Autograph will create NFTs based on Tony Hawk and his skateboards, equipment and apparel.
“The Sandbox will make these NFTs interoperable in its open metaverse, turning Autograph’s high-fidelity avatars into 3D voxel versions that have in-game functionality for experiences, adding utility and value for their owners,” according to a press release.
Hawk said: “I have been a fan of new technology all of my life – from the first videogames and home computers with CGI capabilities – so I am fascinated by the metaverse, and excited to bring our culture into the virtual landscape of The Sandbox.”
The virtual world has over 300 existing partnerships with the likes of Ubisoft (Rabbids), The Walking Dead, Snoop Dogg, Adidas, Deadmau5, The Smurfs, Care Bears and Atari.
On Tuesday former Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki revealed a new studio focused on NFT games. Apex Game Studios’ debut title is a mobile and PC MMORPG called Warrior.
Sales of NFTs dropped to a 12-month low in June amid a broader slowdown in the cryptocurrency market, which has fallen in worth from about $3 trillion in November 2021 to under $1 trillion.
Hawk recently claimed that a planned remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 was canned after Activision Blizzard decided to merge developer Vicarious Visions with Blizzard Entertainment.
