The NFT marketplace X2Y2 has found itself caught in the aftermath of the Ryder Ripps vs Yuga Labs saga. Basically, X2Y2 delisted, then relisted the Ryder Ripps BAYC collection due to the fallout of the Yuga Labs lawsuit.
A few days ago, X2Y2 tweeted that it had delisted six NFT collections from its marketplace. Of course, the six collections were Ryder Ripps’ collections using Yuga Labs’ original NFTs. These “RR/” collections have been controversial ever since Ripps minted them. The artist, who regularly deals in shock value, has stated that these collections are for “educational purposes, as protest and satirical commentary.”
While the feud between Ripps and Yuga Labs has been going on for months, it reached a boiling point over the past week. This is due to a recent viral YouTube video that rehashed many of Ripps’ past accusations against the Yuga Labs founders. Mere days after the YouTube video went live, Yuga Labs announced that it had filed a lawsuit against “all responsible parties”, which notably includes Ryder Ripps.
The day after Yuga Labs announced the lawsuit, X2Y2 tweeted that it had taken down the Ryder Ripps collections. In particular, the NFT marketplace stated that “server providers are now threatening to take #X2Y2 site down”. The move got a lot of criticism, with commenters questioning what such a move meant for the values of decentralization. To be sure, these critiques tend to be levied any time an NFT marketplace moves to delist a collection.
However, X2Y2 was able to reach an agreement with Ripps just hours later. Indeed, X2Y2 relisted the RR/BAYC collection as RR/REDACTED. In addition, the BAYC logo is no longer visible on the collection’s page.
We likely haven’t heard the end of this dispute. Although, given the reasons X2Y2 gave for the delisting, Ryder Ripps may well be facing an uphill battle. The lawsuit from Yuga Labs is clearly significant if server providers are taking this kind of action.
