PopCom, an automated retail technology company specializing in vending and kiosk solutions, will leverage its PopCom kiosk to introduce non-fungible tokens, known as NFTs, to deliver “in real life” artwork while also delivering digital art on the blockchain, according to a press release.
The NFT sale will take place during NFT.NYC, a global gathering of Web3 leaders.
PopCom partnered with New York native Christopher “Knxtti” Green to design an original collection of NFTs to celebrate famous New Yorkers.
The collection, titled “The NYers,” includes cartoon portraits of Biggie, Whoopi Goldberg, Mike Tyson, Jay-Z and Donald Trump.
For $500 the collector receives one of 10 limited edition NFTs, a physical high quality print of the “NYers” collection dispensed from the machine with a QR code to mint a digital NFT. More exclusive perks will be unlocked after purchase.
“Artists have more ways to monetize their artwork than ever before. NFTs have been all the craze, and we are now taking that a step further,” Dawn Dickson, CEO of PopCom, said in the press release. “PopCom is providing artists with the ability to deliver art simultaneously in the physical and the virtual worlds without galleries or auctions. Artists can now sell peer to peer via automated vending.”
The concept behind this “NFT drop” is inspired by the cultural phenomenon of the “sneaker drop,” when fans anticipate and compete for an opportunity to own one of a limited pair of shoes from their favorite designer.
“This is a sneaker drop, but for artists,” said Knxtti in the press release. “NFT artists aren’t used to people physically coming out to purchase their works…it’s all digital and disconnected. My collaboration with PopCom bridges the gap.”
The art will only be sold during the week of NFT.NYC, first available on June 20 at 12 p.m. and can be purchased on a first-come, first-serve basis.
PopCom plans to facilitate several NFT releases using the PopShop enabling local artists to sell NFTs in cities across the country.
